Job Title: Managing Quantity Surveyor
Division: UK Construction
Location: Reading (Covering Uxbridge / Reading / Oxford area )
Reporting To: Commercial Manager

Construction South is part of the UK Construction business and includes the Wales and West, and the South East . Projects on average range between £5 – £50 million and are primarily based in the Public Sector with some projects in the Private Sector. Sectors include Leisure, Justice, Defence, Education, Health and Commercial offices.


Role Purpose

  • Take financial responsibility & accountability for a strategically key project within a division as a site-based Managing Surveyor
  • To take responsibility for the regular review of financial performance of project within the division in order to improve financial certainty and maximise commercial success of projects.
  • To ensure best practice and continuous improvement in divisional financial processes on site.
  • To provide high quality management information to Cluster Commercial Leader (CCL), and support, monitoring and advice to financial staff throughout the division.
  • To lead and develop team of commercial staff on project to suit their and ISG’s aspirations and needs
  • To have the knowledge and interpersonal skills to be involved in identifying future work and actively participate in securing it.
  • To assist the Divisional Board, deliver increasing margin.


Key Accountabilities

  • Adhere to the employment policies of ISG
  • Manage project financial teams in line with the values, psychological contract and culture of ISG
  • Provide clear, appropriate and timely feedback on performance, attitude and behaviour to project commercial individual team members on allocated projects
  • Encourage Commercial Managers to attend to their training pathway, monitoring attendance.
  • Participate in the Performance Development Review process as required by CCL
  • Develop and implement a mechanism for allocated project financials to share with project construction team’s continuity of approach and lessons learnt
  • Ensure that the outcomes of sharing approach and lessons learnt are shared with relevant colleagues, when appropriate
  • Act promptly and positively to address performance or behaviour issues when they arise, utilising the support of HR
  • Provide support to CCL undertake recruitment and selection of project commercial staff
  • Advise CCL on specific training needs for Commercial Managers
  • Embrace and positively roll out well-being principles
  • Maintain a relationship with the relevant Project Managers and Directors responsible for the project including advising them of potential and real risk & opportunity


Productive trade contractor relationships:

  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with directors of trade contractor organisations and other suppliers for allocated projects
  • Ensure Bid Lists are prepared with proper commercial consideration and integrity and that all Bid Lists are approved by the CCL
  • New opportunities:
  • Seek out, follow up and develop sales opportunities (in conjunction with sales and marketing teams)
  • Proactively develop, with colleagues, development of PQS KRM initiative
  • Positive contribution to winning work:
    Provide financial input to proposals
  • Contribute to client presentations


Skills and Experience

  • £1m to £40m project experience as lead Commercial Manager.
  • Experience in establishing, managing and leading a large project team and/or multiple smaller project team.
  • Experience of most forms of contract.
  • Relationships with clients/consultants and suppliers which will raise profile of the division and lead to new opportunities.
  • Experience in claims resolution both with the Employer and Trade Contractor.
  • The candidate will demonstrate direct experience of different project values up to £40m, and different contracts forms which need to include one of the management forms, 2 stage, single stage and Design & Build



  • MCIOB or RICS qualified with industry experience
  • Possess a Degree in Quantity Surveying or Similar
