Overview

The Designer Quantity Surveyor plays a crucial role in the construction industry, where they are responsible for accurately estimating and managing the costs associated with a construction project. Their expertise in numerical and analytical skills, combined with a strong understanding of construction methods and materials, ensures that the financial aspects of a project are effectively managed.

Key responsibilities

  • Prepare and analyze cost estimates for construction projects
  • Collaborate with design teams to ensure cost-effective solutions
  • Conduct site visits and surveys to gather data for estimates
  • Review and negotiate contracts with vendors and subcontractors
  • Monitor project budgets and track expenses
  • Prepare quantity take-offs and bills of quantities
  • Assess and value change orders and variations
  • Utilize software tools for accurate quantity surveying
  • Perform risk analysis and cost control throughout the project lifecycle
  • Ensure compliance with building codes and regulations
  • Contribute to value engineering and cost-saving strategies
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders to provide financial insights
  • Participate in project meetings and provide cost-related updates
  • Resolve disputes related to project costs and claims
  • Maintain accurate documentation and records of all cost-related activities

Required qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or related field
  • Professional certification from a recognized institution (e.g., RICS, AIQS, CIOB)
  • Proven experience in quantity surveying and cost estimation in construction projects
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, BIM, or other relevant design and modeling software
  • Strong knowledge of construction methods, materials, and building regulations
  • Excellent numerical and analytical abilities
  • Ability to interpret and understand technical drawings and specifications
  • Experience in project management and scheduling
  • Advanced skills in using spreadsheets and cost estimating software
  • Effective communication and negotiation skills
