Role – Managing Quantity Surveyor


Location – Sufolk


Purpose of the role:


The Highways Division is the largest of five divisional units that make up the Galliford Try Infrastructure entity.  It delivers projects a wide array of projects and services for national and local clients, ranging from maintenance operations to major projects shaping our infrastructure networks in the UK!  


This team has expanded in recent times as a result of a successfully delivering work and a re-structuring of the business, Highways now includes operations for National Highways, Local Authorities and Highways Maintenance.


The role will require you to drive success and lead a core dedicated site; you will be supporting the commercial lead for the scheme and be responsible for the execution and performance of the Quantity Surveying function for the administration of the contract, maximising quality, service and probability.


What will you be doing:



  • Key project lead in the administration of the contract.

  • Line Manager to the Quantity Surveying teams on specific projects.

  • Company representative for the commercial matters on specific projects. 

  • Management of staff allocations and overhead costs within the profit centre. 

  • Take responsibility for the execution of the Quantity Surveying function on allocated contract.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with the client and stakeholders

  • Ensure client commercial requirements and goals are achieved

  • The role will include regular weekly reviews of cost and value with monthly financial analysis and forecast meetings with the Management team.

  • Supervision, development and training of subordinates


Role Dimensions



  • Able to oversee the delivery of a portfolio of projects ranging individually in value.

  • Effective positive cash management

  • Provide commercial appraisals for project portfolios for external audit purposes.

  • Develop bid brochures and corporate approvals papers in support of the Commercial Manager.

  • Administer the simulation of project risks and report appropriate levels of cost risk allowances.

  • Supporting the teams in the profitable delivery of all allocated projects, directly managing key supply chain accounts.

  • Responsible for key decisions relating to the commercial matters working alongside the Project Manager. 

  • Settling supply chain and final accounts.

  • Maximising margin enhancement and commercial risk mitigation for programmes of work.

  • Management of portfolio gainshare and KPIs affecting gainshare return.

  • Trend analysis (forecast v’s actual costs) for target and lump sum cost agreements.

  • Line management and client management experience.

  • Good understanding of employment law and performance management

  • Track record in the management of a team of quantity surveyors at various levels.

  • Self-motivated with decisive, proactive approach to problem solving/issue resolution

  • Ability to focus on business and role priorities

  • Ability to compile and present management accounts for a profit centre. 

  • Ability to lead negotiations and support the framework delivery teams and project supply chain to develop design-to-budget affordable solutions for clients through design development and operational delivery. 

  • Strong commercial and business strategy background/track record;

  • Good technical understanding of the requirements for managing staff allocations and operating/overhead costs within a business profit centre; essential. 

  • Able to develop and implement supply chain agreements and operating arrangements both pre-contract and during delivery. This includes overseeing any mid and post tender interviews at the project pricing stage.

  • Track record in negotiation and final account settlement; essential 

  • Knowledge of the business risks and opportunities associated with the delivery of construction projects.

  • Significant pre-construction experience (feasibility assessment, cost planning and supply chain management) for frameworks, programmes and/or tendered works schemes. 

  • Past experience in managing a portfolio of projects essential, ideally in a collaborative form of framework or programme of work.

  • Ability in the use of structured commercial management systems is essential as is the ability to operate main stream IT systems (eg MS Office Suite)

  • Previous portfolio experience at Managing QS level including risk and opportunity management; desirable.

  • Line management experience, including knowledge and awareness of employment law including managing poor performance; desirable

  • Qualification in commercial/surveying e.g. Quantity Surveying Degree

  • Professional qualification e.g. MCIOB or MRICS, ideally Incorporated member, working towards full membership; desirable but not essential
