Opportunity


The opportunity is for a dynamic, outgoing and ambitious individual to join a growing department, to work on a wide range of affordable housing projects. The candidate should be self-motivated, able to work with autonomy in the delivery of  schemes ranging in size and scope. The position would suit an individual who wishes to progress their career in NRP, who actively sponsor and promote new talent within the business. They should also be able to work effectively in a team with a collaborative approach to work, both internally and externally with the design and delivery teams.


The candidate should be experienced and comfortable in a client facing capacity,  managing  schemes on a day-to-day basis and be adept at building good, long lasting working relationships with clients to secure repeat business. The candidate ideally should be experienced and comfortable undertaking business development functions as part of their role, which is rewarded in the NRP career progression framework.




Skills and experience


Experience in both pre & post-contract quantity surveying duties with experience working on residential schemes, ideally with a focus on affordable housing. 




Strong communication and negotiation skills are very important as well as an ability to bring together numerous stakeholders together to bring project opportunities to fruition.




Pre-contract duties to include:



  • Site feasibility & appraisals – producing project appraisals for housing associations, private developers and also with land agents. Understanding of different opportunities -  land-led schemes or S.106 unit disposals and a mix of 100% affordable housing, or sites with varying amounts of open-market units.  Developing strategies for marketing these to housing associations for bids or to developers to purchase sites, then providing advise as to maximise the commercial performance of schemes.

  • Cost Estimation – Production of Order of Cost Estimates and Cost Plans for schemes right from project inception through to pre-tender estimates. Management of the company’s ‘benchmarking’ costs and ability to identify and provide costings for site specific ‘abnormal costs’.  Producing and issuing ‘value for money reports’ to clients for them to present to boards to obtain sign-off for schemes.

  • Tendering & Procurement – Management of the full tendering and procurement processes for schemes of all sizes. Providing advice on tendering/procurement routes.  Negotiating parties into contract on schemes, strong to understanding of the positions of both parties when appraising risk apportionment effectively.

  • Business Development – Be a key part of NRP’s affordable housing business development function winning work from clients. Engagement in the company’s framework bidding processes, particularly in the technical responses and presence in any formal face to face interviews.


Post-contract duties to include:



  • Contract Administration, Cost Control & Reporting – Provide comprehensive cost control and reporting procedures to clients giving clear, but concise advise on the commercial performance and risk profile of schemes. Through a thorough understanding of the development process, accurately report risks through the project, but also provide strategies for risk mitigation. Through full understanding of the various contracts, advise clients on their contractual positions when issues arise and an ability to close down potential disputes to a satisfactory conclusion before issues are escalated.

  • Change Management – An ability to deliver successful change management on schemes through adopting the correct procedures and with a full understanding of the contractual mechanisms resulting in minimal commercial and programme impact.

  • Employer’s Agent & Project Management – Thorough understanding of the full employer’s agent and project management duties once into contract through to Practical Completion and the End of Defects procedures.




Qualifications / Professional Membership




Degree qualified – Quantity Surveying or similar


MRICS – either chartered or working towards
