Introduction

An established Engineering and Built Environment Consulting Firm based in Durban is seeking a motivated and technically competent Quantity Surveyor to join its professional team.

The ideal candidate will have practical experience within a Quantity Surveying consultancy, with exposure to cost estimating, Bills of Quantities, tender documentation, contract administration and financial management of construction projects.

First preference will be given to a professionally registered Quantity Surveyor (PrQS), including candidates who have recently achieved professional registration and have limited post-registration experience.

However, the firm is also open to considering a strong Junior Quantity Surveyor with relevant practical experience, sound technical ability and a genuine commitment to developing a long-term career within the profession.

Duties & Responsibilities

Quantity Surveying & Cost Management
 

  • Prepare detailed cost estimates and project budgets.
  • Compile and measure Bills of Quantities (BOQs).
  • Undertake cost planning, elemental estimating and cost analysis.
  • Monitor project expenditure and assist with cost control throughout the construction lifecycle.
  • Prepare cash-flow projections and financial reports.
  • Assist with value engineering and cost-saving initiatives.
  • Identify potential financial risks and assist with cost management strategies.

 

Tendering & Contract Administration
 

  • Prepare tender documentation and pricing schedules.
  • Assist with tender evaluations and recommendations.
  • Review contractor quotations and tender submissions.
  • Assist with contract administration and commercial documentation.
  • Prepare and assess variation orders and additional work claims.
  • Support the management of contractual and commercial obligations.

Project Financial Management
 

  • Conduct site measurements and verify completed works.
  • Prepare monthly valuations and payment certificates.
  • Monitor project costs against approved budgets.
  • Assist with financial reporting and project cost forecasts.
  • Prepare and reconcile final accounts.
  • Maintain accurate financial and contractual project records.

 

Project Coordination & Client Liaison
 

  • Liaise with architects, engineers, contractors and other members of the professional team.
  • Attend site meetings and project progress discussions.
  • Assist senior professionals with the commercial management of projects.
  • Provide regular updates regarding project expenditure and financial performance.
  • Ensure assigned work is completed accurately and within agreed deadlines.

Desired Experience & Qualification

Minimum Requirements

  • Relevant Diploma or Degree in Quantity Surveying, Building Science or a related Built Environment qualification.
  • Professional registration as a PrQS with SACQSP would be highly advantageous and is the client's first preference.
  • Candidates registered as Candidate Quantity Surveyors, or those working towards registration, will also be considered.
  • Relevant practical experience within a Quantity Surveying consultancy or professional built environment practice.
  • Experience preparing Bills of Quantities, cost estimates and tender documentation.
  • Exposure to contract administration, monthly valuations and project cost reporting.
  • Proficiency in WinQS and/or DimensionX would be advantageous.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • Understanding of construction contracts and commercial project management principles.
  • Strong numerical, analytical and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a professional project team.

Package & Remuneration

R24 000.00 to R35 000.00 depending on experience and qualifications
