Job Summary

The Senior Quantity Surveyor is a senior member of the construction supervision team. He is responsible for the financial administration of supervision contracts. The jobholder checks contractors’ payment applications and verifies the amounts claimed by contractors against supplier invoices and measurement records. He provides advice on methods of measurement found in the contract and ensures the contractor is accurately paid for actual work done in accordance with the method of measurement stated in the contract.

Key Responsibilities

As the MEP Quantity Surveyor your duties and responsibilities will involve

  • Evaluating forms of contract and advise on their suitability.
  • Assist project managers with project programming matters and procurement of resources.
  • Take financial lead – analyse and control project costs, prepare and substantiate claims where necessary, make recommendations for payments, submit applications and ultimately, endeavor to deliver projects on time and in budget.
  • Attend meetings and carry out site visits as and when necessary.
  • Demonstrate clear knowledge of laws, regulations, and guidelines of the industry and H&S to ensure legal compliance.
  • Aim to strengthen client relationships and ensure the successful continuance of business operations.
  • Review Supplier and Sub-Contractor quotes on won projects
  • Prepare tender documents for suppliers and Sub-Contractors on won projects
  • Prepare payments for Suppliers and Sub-contractors
  • Keep track on project progress and report on plant, materials and labour spend
  • Produce job costing and ‘cost to complete’ reports on Projects
  • Produce Operations Department financial P&L reporting across all projects
  • Production of a monthly management report to include; work in progress, monthly invoicing and monthly forecasting

Required skills and qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in quantity surveying/Mechanical, construction management or a related field.
  • 12+ years of experience in quantity surveying or cost consulting, preferably in the construction industry.
  • Sound knowledge of construction industry practices, regulations and standards.
  • Proficiency in cost estimation and cost management techniques.
  • Knowledge of service guidelines, such as the National Building Code (NBC), ANSI/ASHRAE for HVAC, and LEED for green buildings.
  • Familiarity with contract administration and legal aspects of construction projects.
  • Understanding general contracting, design-build, package contracting, value-based project and loading margins and lumpsum in commercial fit-out, residential, hotel or retail projects.
  • Experience working with AutoCAD and validating quantities from the given drawings.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritise tasks effectively.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with extraordinary negotiation abilities.
  • Proficiency in relevant software and tools for quantity surveying.

Preferred skills and qualifications

  • Experience working on various construction projects, including residential and commercial sites.
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations and environmental standards.
  • Experience with building information modelling (BIM) and quantity takeoff software.
  • Familiarity with contract law and construction contracts.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality work.
  • Strong project management skills and ability to work under pressure. 
  • Professional membership or certification in quantity surveying or construction management, will be an added value.
