Quantity Surveyor

Introduction

  • Protection of the organisation’s financial and commercial interests
  • Cost planning, procurement, contract administration, and cost control
  • Delivery within approved budgets and contractual requirements
  • Accurate valuations, claims assessments, reconciliations, and final accounts

Duties & Responsibilities

PRE-FEASIBILITY STAGE

  • Reviewing and evaluating design concepts amounts
  • Preparing preliminary estimates of construction cost 
  • Assisting in preparation of financial viability reports / feasibility studies 
  • Auditing space allocations (structures/buildings/equipment) against the initial brief 

 

FEASIBILITY STAGE

  • Reviewing design and outline specifications and exercising cost control 
  • Preparing detailed estimates of construction cost 
  • Reviewing the financial viability report / audit of Cost Budget Estimates 
  • Preparing area schedules and advising on space and other project allowances
  • Advising on escalation formulae and their project implication

 

PROCUREMENT STAGE

  • Assisting in the formulation of procurement strategy for contractors, sub-contractors and suppliers 
  • Assisting in preparing contract documents (pre-contract documentation) 
  • Reviewing of health and safety requirements for projects and their costing thereof
  • Reviewing working drawings for compliance with the approved budget for construction cost and / or financial viability
  • Preparing documentation for both principal and subcontract procurement including the

measurement and design of work, and the drafting of preliminaries, preambles and contract conditions

  • Taking off quantities and preparing price determination documents, including abstracts, schedules and pricing specialist construction elements in accordance with industry practice norms 
  • Preparing schedules of quantities for engineering works (civils, structural, piping and electrical) and the various methods of measurement
  • Advising on selection of tenderers 
  • Assisting with tenders’ negotiation of prices
  • Evaluating and reporting on tenders, including clarification meetings
  • Assist with preparing contract documents

 

EXECUTION STAGE

  • Attending site handover and regular site meetings, technical and progress meetings 
  • Preparing schedules of predicted cash flow 
  • Cost control during progress of the works including advising on proposed variations and on alternative construction methods and sequencing 
  • Reporting on cost variations and contractual issues
  • Adjudication and resolving financial claims by the contractor or suppliers 
  • Preparation of valuations for interim payment certificates and reconciliation statements
  • Measuring and recording site information for final account purposes

 

CLOSE-OUT STAGE

  • Assist with preparing and agreeing on final account(s) 
  • Preparing valuations for final payment certificates and reconciliation statements.

Desired Experience & Qualification

Qualifications Required

4-year BSc (QS) university degree 

3-year University of Technology diploma advancing to a B-Tech degree in QS

 

Experience

Minimum of 5 years quantity surveying experience within the Building, Industrial or Mining Industry with Mechanical, Electrical and Civil contracting scopes.

 

Skills Required

Must be a PrQS registered with SACQSP
