Quantity Surveyor

IVANPLATS (Pty) Ltd, a subsidiary of Ivanhoe Mines, is advancing the development of its world-class palladium-rhodium-nickel-copper-gold project in the Limpopo Province near Mokopane. This unique mineral deposit will be exploited using large mechanised state-of-the-art underground mining methods, deploying the latest technology to   develop this “mine of the future”. Suitably qualified and experienced candidates are invited to apply for the following vacancies required for the project development.

Suitable candidates must possess the following minimum qualifications and skills

  • Degree in Quantity Surveying or Construction Management.
  • Strong experience in contract administration, cost control and commercial management.
  • Proven experience managing multiple contractors and complex work packages.
  • Strong understanding of construction contracts (FIDIC, NEC or similar advantageous).
  • Experience working in high-volume, fast-paced project environments.

Suitable candidates must have the following work experience

  • Minimum 8–12 years’ experience in Quantity Surveying within mining, construction or infrastructure projects.

The successful candidate will be responsible for, but not be limited to:

  Contract Administration and Governance

  • Administer all contracts in accordance with agreed terms and conditions.
  • Ensure all contractors operate within defined contractual frameworks.
  • Manage contractual correspondence, instructions and notices.
  • Ensure all variations and changes are properly documented, approved and controlled.

Measurement, Valuation and Certification

  • Take full accountability for the measurement and valuation of work completed.
  • Review and validate all measurements prepared by Junior QS and contractors.
  • Ensure interim payment certificates are accurate, complete and aligned to contract terms.
  • Approve valuations for submission to management for payment processing.

  Cost Control and Financial Management

  • Monitor project costs against approved budgets and forecasts.
  • Identify cost overruns, inefficiencies or deviations early.
  • Implement corrective actions to maintain cost discipline.
  • Provide regular cost reporting and commercial insights to management.

  Variation and Change Management

  • Assess and manage all variations to scope of work.
  • Ensure variations are properly justified, priced and approved before execution.
  • Prevent unauthorised work from being executed and subsequently claimed.
  • Maintain full control over scope changes to avoid cost escalation.

  Contractor Commercial Management

  • Engage with contractors on all commercial matters.
  • Ensure contractors understand contract terms, pricing structures and measurement principles.
  • Resolve commercial queries, disputes and issues proactively.
  • Monitor contractor financial performance and sustainability.

   Integration with Procurement and Buying

  • Work closely with Buyer / Estimator to align material pricing with contract rates.
  • Ensure procurement costs are accurately reflected in project valuations.
  • Prevent discrepancies between procurement pricing and contractor claims.

  Integration with Construction and Planning

  • Work closely with Construction Manager and Supervisors to validate physical progress.
  • Ensure alignment between work executed on site and commercial records.
  • Coordinate with Planner to align cost reporting with project progress.

  Documentation and Audit Trail

  • Ensure all commercial transactions are fully documented and auditable.
  • Maintain complete records of measurements, valuations, contracts and variations.
  • Support internal and external audit requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with company governance and financial controls.

  Risk Management and Fraud Prevention

  • Identify risks related to cost leakage, over-measurement, inflated claims or unauthorised work.
  • Implement controls to prevent manipulation of quantities or pricing.
  • Monitor patterns of claims and contractor behaviour for irregularities.
  • Escalate any suspected fraud or governance breaches immediately.

  Team Leadership and Development

  • Supervise and guide Junior Quantity Surveyors.
  • Ensure consistency and accuracy across all commercial processes.
  • Build capability within the commercial team.
  • Drive a culture of discipline, accuracy and accountability
