About the Opportunity

An established UK-based specialist construction and fire protection business is looking to appoint an experienced Quantity Surveyor based in South Africa to support its growing portfolio of projects across the United Kingdom.

The business delivers specialist passive fire protection and compliance solutions across commercial, residential, public-sector and government environments, working with contractors, developers, property managers and estates teams.

This is an excellent opportunity for a commercially strong Quantity Surveyor who would like to work remotely from South Africa while gaining exposure to a diverse portfolio of UK construction projects.

The Role

The Quantity Surveyor will take commercial responsibility for projects from initial tender and cost planning through to project delivery, variations and final account.

Working closely with the UK-based operational and project teams, you will ensure projects are commercially controlled, accurately costed and delivered within agreed margins.

Duties & Responsibilities

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed cost estimates, budgets and tender submissions.
  • Review drawings, specifications, scopes of work and tender documentation.
  • Undertake quantity take-offs and measurement from construction drawings.
  • Prepare and manage Bills of Quantities (BOQs).
  • Support tender pricing and commercial bid submissions.
  • Manage project budgets, forecasts and cost reporting.
  • Monitor project expenditure against budget and identify commercial risks.
  • Prepare and assess variations, change orders and additional works.
  • Prepare valuations and applications for payment.
  • Manage subcontractor and supplier quotations and commercial comparisons.
  • Assist with subcontractor appointments and commercial negotiations.
  • Monitor subcontractor costs and payments.
  • Prepare monthly commercial and project reports.
  • Support final accounts and project close-outs.
  • Work closely with Project Managers to protect project margins and identify cost-saving opportunities.
  • Maintain accurate commercial documentation and records throughout the project lifecycle.

Desired Experience & Qualification

Experience & Qualifications

  • Degree, diploma or recognised qualification in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management or a related discipline.
  • Approximately 5+ years' Quantity Surveying experience within construction, building services or a specialist contracting environment.
  • Strong experience in estimating, tendering, BOQs, valuations, variations and final accounts.
  • Experience working across commercial, government, public-sector, healthcare, education, defence/military or large residential projects would be advantageous.
  • Experience within passive fire protection, fire stopping, fire doors, MEP, fit-out, drylining, refurbishment or another specialist subcontracting environment would be highly advantageous.
  • Exposure to UK construction projects, contracts or commercial practices would be beneficial but is not essential.
  • Strong Excel and commercial reporting capability.
  • Comfortable interpreting technical drawings and specifications.
